In the Shadow of Islam Demetra Vaka 9781289521172 Books

This novel was published in 1911, several years before the start of World War I, which ended in tearing up the Muslim-oriented Ottoman Empire of Turkey into the new `countries' of Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and several emirates, as envisioned by the Christian Crusader-oriented British and French victors. But, this novel was written before then, but it does highlight the tensions of the Armenians who were subjects of the Turks. It was written by Demetra Vaka who had some familiarization with the Muslim religion and their customs in Turkey, which add some authenticity or localness to this novel, and it prophesises: "What will be the outcome of the [Young Turks] revolution? Will it mean the regeneration of Turkey - or will it mean at last the end of the Turks in Europe?" The novel's setting is in Constantinople/Istanbul. The plot involves a 20ish European gal who bravely travels by herself into this land of Muslim men, who are captivated by this all-to-carefree young woman. Several of the Muselmen want to marry her into joining their harem. I won't give away the ending, but you understand the generic "fair damsel in distress" scenario, but with a Middle Eastern flair of scenery. Not a great novel, but not bad.
